so far = up to now
so far =/= until now
Until implies that an opposite situation has occurred against the period before that suggested by "until".
In this sense, the sentence
Until now I have been to Stockholm, Berlin and Rome.
does not make sense.
What can possibly be the opposite of "have been to Stockholm, etc."? I can't think of a possible scenario to the situation.
So far I have been to Stockholm, Berlin and Rome.
= Up to now I have been to Stockholm, Berlin and Rome.
but not "until now"
I did not know much about his work so far.
Now I still do not know much about his work.
I did not know much about his work until now.
Now I know more about his work.
