It can be a controversial topic in the bible on what the soul is.
Many christian's of the protestant/ evangelical churches as well as the catholic church teach that the soul is the real person living in our human bodies.
According to this teaching the soul is the seat of our real emotions, feelings, and thoughts which God has installed into every human being.
Furthermore it is believed that the soul in man is immortal which continues to live after our mortal bodies die a natural death.
Does the bible teach that the soul is the real you and that it is immortal?
When God created Adam as the first human being -- we read this:
(Gen 2:7) And the LORD God formed man out of the dust of the ground, and BREATHED into his NOSTRILS the BREATH of LIFE; and man BECAME a LIVING SOUL. (caps mine)
Notice Adam was not created as a living soul -- he became a living soul. This living soul in Adam was called the breath of life which enabled Adam to be alive.
The living soul in man is nothing more than the breath of life which allows us to breath and live !
How are people coming up with this idea that the soul is the real person inside us ?
The soul has got nothing to do with our minds and conscience which is part of our bodies, neither is the living soul inside us immortal.
Jesus clearly stated that God could destroy (out of existence) both the soul and body in *hell* (Matt 10:28)
We also read that between Christ's death and resurrection that he was DEAD (out of existence) in both soul and body for 3 days and 3 nights in *hell* (Matt 12:41 & Acts 2:27-31)
Yes it is true that the soul is also connected with the spirit in man just like it is with the body --- but we have to read the context it written in from the bible when this is mentioned.
Bottom line the soul is the breath of life in man which dies along with the body in the *grave* If you are dead in the grave then you have a dead body and a dead soul both not alive !
Jesus proved through the resurrection from the *grave" that there was LIFE after DEATH.
His death, burial, and resurrection for our sins is the gospel of our salvation (1Cor 15:1-4) If you will believe this then you will have eternal life from the *grave" through the resurrection (John 11:25, 1Cor 15:20-23, Eph 5:14, Phil 3:21 & Tit 1:2)
btw- the subject of the true identity of *hell*in the bible is also a controversial issue.
According to the Hebrew word "sheol" meaning the Grave and the Greek word "hades" meaning the abode of the dead --- our English word "hell" for these two words simply means the Grave NOT a place of eternal conscious torment in fire for the unsaved which many christian's connect that persons "immortal soul" as going to after death.
