音樂不是用聽的難道是用舌頭嚐。是的,這就是這句話看似矛盾卻又似非而是之處。音樂當然非僅是可用耳朵聆聽,當然也可用心感受。但原句的出處其實沒這麼深奧,只是回應一般未能領略古典樂的凡夫俗子的疑惑。

原句的始作俑者是 Bill Nye。年代是1887,由來則是來自於讀者的一個問題,
What is the peculiarity of classical music, and how can one distinguish it? (古典音樂的獨特之處何在? 又該如何審察?)

上句應非完整的句子,因此處的music是有所指,是特定的音樂,非對所有的音樂而言,因此上句至少應於music前加 上 the。

The music is better than it sounds.
此音樂比起風聞(傳聞,聽說)的要來得好。
