Is the bagel toasted or untoasted? If it's a fresh bagel, I like cream cheese. If toasted, I prefer butter.

For me, it depends on what flavor of bagel I'm having. If it's a plain bagel, I use flavored cream cheese; if it's a flavored bagel, I use butter/oleo.
