1. There were not enough chairs to go round so we had to sit on forms.

What is 'sit on forms'?

2. The dog came bounding out towards us.

有bound out 呢個phrase?

3. (a)Alcohol shouldn't be relied on sterilizing water.
(b)Alcohol shouldn't be relied on to sterilize water.

以上邊句係correct?

1. I believe 'forms' is a typo of the word 'foams'.
'Foams' may be used colloquially for foam mattress.
'Sit on foams' may mean 'sit on foam mattress'.

望月一都, can you provide references for forms meaning '矮矮的、無背的板凳'?

2. bound, intransitive verb, meaning to run with long steps, especially in an enthusiastic way.

bound, verb intransitive, meaning to move by leaping, bounce, or rebound.

'The dog came bounding towards us' is good enough but I won't say 'bound out' is incorrect. bound out 只是表逹釋放出來,(從屋內或拴狗頸之皮帶)

3. Only (b) 'Alcohol shouldn't be relied on to sterilize water' is correct.

One of the usage of 'to + infinitive' is to express a purpose.
to + infinitive 一個用法是表示行動目的

rely on 是一組字,不是 on sterilizing,句子是被動式,意思是
We should not rely on alcohol to sterilize water.

英文對錯不決定於是否順口, 如果要用 sterilizing,on 後必需有另一個 preposition.

Alcohol shouldn't be relied on for sterilizing water.

I thought the same at first that 'forms' should be 'foams'. But then in http://www.thefreedictionary.com/form , I found : form - (Chiefly British) A long seat; a bench. So both foams and forms are meaningful here.

Thanks for the comment.

1.

To sterilize water, alcohol shouldn't be relied on.

a 的意思會變成「不應依賴能把水消毒的酒精。」
Sterilizing water, alcohol shouldn't be relied on.

希望幫到你。

(1)sit on forms can be building forms; be structure forms.
(2)If bounding out is a phrase, then it means hurdling, jumping, leaping towards us .
(3)(a) usage as a greund.
(3)(b) usage as an infinitive.
