For both of the above sentences, you can use except or except for in place of besides. But please note that the substitution only works for negative statements as your examples show.

For positive statements, besides means in addition to as in the sentence below:

He has other hobbies besides reading and watching television.

兩部字典的示範句都用了否定句,besides 在否定句中才可解作 except,否則要解作 in addition to。

He does many household works besides ironing.
意思是「不單燙衣服他還做很多家務。」
Besides 就不能用 except 替代。

一般而言

besides前的句包含一些某一類的描述,besides後的句附加其他在前句類別未能描述或者有點不同的東西。所以besides前跟後的東西並沒有必然(必定)的對立性(opposite)。

except後的句所講的東西必然(一定)是跟except前的句所講或描述的東西是相反或對立(opposite)的。

由於你的兩例句的前句都用是"not"的句式,前句本身用了否定句式接後句時無論besides或except都暗示後句所講或描述才是正面/正確的東西。因此,假如評論文法/句法,兩句都應該是用except作為連接詞才是合理的表達。

第一句假如要作為正確例句
意思要是他喜愛閱讀和看電視,除此他還有很多其他的嗜好。[兩句組都是同類和正面的]
He has many other hobbies besides reading and watching television.
原句意思還可以理解..因為not have other hobbies仍未算是後句那兩樣的反面。


第二句同類
He does many household works besides ironing.
除了燙衣服外他還做很家務。
原句的前句基本是行為上跟後句事務成反的,所以用besides其實是用錯意。

這種句組意思決定用詞有時不是用硬翻譯(詞義)可以解釋。
