兩部字典的示範句都用了否定句，besides 在否定句中才可解作 except，否則要解作 in addition to。

He does many household works besides ironing.
意思是「不單燙衣服他還做很多家務。」
Besides 就不能用 except 替代。

一般而言

besides前的句包含一些某一類的描述，besides後的句附加其他在前句類別未能描述或者有點不同的東西。所以besides前跟後的東西並沒有必然(必定)的對立性(opposite)。

except後的句所講的東西必然(一定)是跟except前的句所講或描述的東西是相反或對立(opposite)的。
