My questions are in bold. Thank You!

Q: When is the party?
A: (March 25th @6:00 pm)

I don't know how to combine all information into one sentence.
e.g. The party is on the 25th of marth at 6 o'clock at night. Is it a correct answer?

For the most part, dancers perform in groups. Top dancers do perform solos as well.

Why does the writer use "do" in this sentence?
What is the meaning of "do" in this sentence?

If you were a dancer, what television program would you be likely to find work on?

a. golf television b. news television
c. business television d. music television

What's the meaning of this clause "would you be likely to find work on"?

✔ 最佳答案
1. If you want to combine all info into 1 sentence. It may be: The party will be hold on 25th of March at 6pm. (Of course you may change the tense to fit the actual situation.) Normally, we use "evening" but not "night" to express 6-9pm. And we usually won't add a definite article before a date. Nowadays "am" and "pm" were fornal English that used to express time.

2. It is an emphatic structure. In this case, "do" was known as an auxiliary verb and "perform" as a main verb. Those kind of structure are used to emphasize the subject of the sentence. Actually the auxiliary verb has no meaning but the syntatic function. {I agree with "Jenkin" that the tense was shown by the auxiliary verb but it's not what "動詞時態原始形" or something like that. The auxiliary verb show the tense and the main verb stay in dictionary form is the grammatic rules. By the way, the origins of tense is the "verb-to-be" (in English is "be"). "Do" is just a model verb (情態動詞).}

3. The meaning of that clause is "你最有可能從中得到工作機會". So the whole question is a dancer could through which kind of TV program to get a job most likely.

"Perform" is not 「第三身眾數現在式」but the dictionary form, although the dictionary form and the present tense of third person plural had the same inflection.

The word "does" appear in an interrogative mood (疑問句) is because of an interrogative adverb should be add into an interrogative sentence. It is not about any destruction (解構) or else like this. It just a grammatic rules.

By the way, "does" was an interrogative adverb here but not auxiliary verb or "origins of verb's tense form".

同意「garlic2010」君的意見,這問題的內文顯然是informal English。而疑問句以介詞結束也乎合正統句法,其實正為此,才有學者認為直述句以介詞結束是不正統的寫法。「Jenkin」君似乎混淆了。

Subject to base building provisions availability prior to additional / independent system.Subject to space allocation availability. The party is on the twenty fifth of March at six o’clock in the evening.以上是如果你是想用全寫寫出那句子]但一般會是The party is on March 25 (或25th of March) at six pm.便可以了。 Top dancers do perform solos as well. 英文的動詞(verb)跟它本身的時態(tense)是可以分開寫的,上面句子的verb是perform,平時的句子會寫成Top performers perform solos…已經可以是正確的寫法,但當中perform的時態是「第三身眾數的現在式」(third person plural present tense),當作者想加強個動詞的相對(對比其他dancer/dancing group)的話便把這個tense(do)寫出來,不要誤會這個do並不是「做」某事情的那個verb(動詞),而是verb的tense form的原始詞。 假如這句的主角是單一個dancer,例如他叫john smith(假設他是世界知名的舞蹈家)John Smith does perform solo in this event.便是把平時的寫法John Smith performs solo in this event.當中的tense form抽了出來強調。其實當你把一句句子要轉為問題時也會用這解體法:Does John Smith perform solo in this event?其實是同一文法原理。 What's the meaning of this clause "would you be likely to find work on"? “find work”直譯解便是找到工作,問題是問在(on)那種電視節目(tv program)中你(一個舞者)會較大機會(be likely)找到工作留意那on是指回最前的tv program,所以令你費解為何在一問句尾會有個preposition.當然正統英語老師會說在一句句子尾以preposition結束是差的句法,有時甚至說是錯,但今時今日這種「說法」是可以接受的。其實如果改為正統問句也可以的:If you were a dancer, on what television program would you be likely to find work?不過就無味道,不會叫被問而要回答的留意要回答的是那一種電視節目,問題結束是找工作,所以帶不出提問者想著重的重點。當然選擇題全是xxx, yyy televsion的,所以給了你固定答案。但是深(難)一點的選擇是可以mtvoperamusicaldrama

what television program would you be likely to find work on?

This is a bad if not wrong sentence.
We say
You would likely find work on music television.
and not
You would be likely to find work on music television.

2012-01-11 03:32:33 補充:
We may express like this

It would be likely for you to find work on music television.

Some adjectives just do not follow a personal subject.

2012-01-12 00:38:42 補充:
... because these adjectives are not supposed to qualify physical entities predicatively.

2012-01-12 00:51:05 補充:
如果句子是問題,以 preposition 作結尾是一般寫法,反而將前置詞放於 question word (where, whom, which, what) 前是不自然。

Who (whom) are you going to the party with?
What are you doing this for?
Which hotel will you be staying at?
