The boy loved the girl.The girl is studying in library.
1. The boy loved the girl, who is studying in the library.
2. The girl, whom the boy loved, is studying in the library.


The man was in his 30s who The police arrested .
1. The man, who was in his 30s, was arrested by the police.
2. The man, whom the police arrested, was in his 30s.

Who is the subjective case . He is the boy, who is Mary's classmate. who - he when we change the above into two separate sentences.
Whom is the objective case. He is the boy, whom we met.
whom = him
Whose is the possessive pronoun = He is the boy, whose father is a policeman. whose = his

The man was in his 30s who the police arrested.
This sentence is incorrect.

The man who/whom the police arrested was in his 30s.

The boy loved the girl. The girl is studying in library.

你可以把第二句化做relative clause, 又可以把第一句化做relative clause.

The boy loved the girl who is studying in library.
The girl who(m) the boy loved is studying in the library.



The man was in his 30s who the police arrested.
可唔可以用whom, 取決於它在從句中是否作主語. 如果它是主語就不可以改用whom.
這句中, who 是一個關係代詞, 指the man., 而從句說 the police arrested the man. 所以who是在從句中作賓語而不是主語.(the police 才是從句的主語)
所以這句的whom 可以改做who.

不過我覺得關係從句應該緊隨其先行詞, 即是代詞所代的對象(the man)
好似咁樣: The man who the police arrested was in his 30s.
(然而我不是100%肯定關係從句必須緊隨其先行詞)

是否用whom,
應該是取決於它在從句中的角色,
而不是取決於它在主句中的角色.

你給的2句, the man 在主句中賓語, 在從句作主語. 所以 who是主語, 不可用whom.

改善1 : The boy who loves the girl is studying in library. ( adj clause )


2 : The police arrested the man whom was in 30s. ( adj clause )

( police 是 subject, the man 是 object.那當是用whom=object of who. )
