您的老師給的句子正是所謂的台灣英文，文法結構上其實是不太正確的，因為前後兩句沒有辦法連接起來，這種句型可能只有台灣人自己看得懂。正確用法應該是

After he finished his homework last night, he found (or noticed) that his family had (already) gone to sleep.

如果就上述句型而言，因為他做完功課後才發現他家人已經睡了，所以你不能用 As 或 When 或 While，更不能用Before。另外，是 had gone to sleep，不是 had gone to asleep。

如果你想用 while 造句，可以參考下述句型，但意思就不太一樣了，就變成''當他在做功課時''，他家 人就已經上床睡了，而不是''做完功課後''才發現他家人睡了。

His family had gone (or went) to sleep while he was doing his homework last night.
