我有條relative clause問題唔識做..想問下大家:
Japanese is an interesting languagem, WHICH is quite similar to
Chinese. ( WHICH ...... IS A RELATIVE CLAUSE HERE.

Japanese is an interesting language AND is quite similar to Chinese (HERE AND IS A CONJUNCTION BUT NOTHING TO DO WITH RELATIVE CLAUSE)

我分別寫過下面2個ANS,但都係錯既- - THIS IS ALSO CORRECT BUT EMPHASISING JAPANESE IS SIMILAR TO CHINESE INSTEAD OF EMPHASISING IT IS AN INTERESTING LANAGUAGE.

Janpanese, which is quite similar to Chinese, is an intersting language.
ALL THE HIGHLIGHTED PARTS ARE A RELATIVE CLAUSE. Hope it is clear to you.

CORRECTION (in my comment line): "This is not a perfect answer but is much fairer and more neutral than other answers."

Only回答者: 候選編號 004 (回答時間: 2009-04-14 03:40:16 ) has answered on the difference between a defining and non-defining. And the answer is quite right too.

A defining relative clause gives essential information about the noun or noun phrase it modifies, without which the sentence wouldn't make sense as the listener or reader would not be able to identify the noun in the sentence.(http://www.usingenglish.com/glossary/defining-relative-clause.html)

2009-04-16 18:42:24 補充:
A non-defining relative clause gives extra information about a noun or noun phrase and has commas at both ends.(http://www.usingenglish.com/glossary/non-defining-relative-clause.html)

Japanese is an interesting language. It is quite similar to Chinese.

答案一定是 non-defining relative clause,因為 Japanese 是一個專有名詞,relative clause 作用是補充資料而不是界定那一種日本語。

發問者第一個答案
Janpanese, which is quite similar to Chinese, is an intersting language.
是正確的,但 Japanese 同 interesting 都串錯字,請留意。

Japanese, which is quite similar to Chinese, is an interesting language.
Japanese, which is an interesting language, is quite similar to Chinese.

以上兩句都是正確的 non-defining relative clause,第一句是要表達 Japanese is an interesting language 為主;第二句要表達 Japanese is quite similar to Chinese 為主。原句以 interesting language 行先,第一句是較佳答案。

2009-04-16 04:38:46 補充:
Japanese is an interesting language. It is quite similar to Chinese.
可以轉成
Japanese is an interesting language which is quite similar to Chinese.
以上寫法是 defining relative clause.

2009-04-16 05:02:19 補充:
which is quite similar to Chinese 作用不是解釋或形容 Japanese,而是用作解釋或形容 an interesting language,那可以是指任何一種語言,relative clause 的作用是去講清楚那種語言是怎樣的,所以就是 defining relative clause。
