這種句式是 relative clause, responsibility 後有 that/which，不過被省略

the responsibility (that/which) a pet brings
which 是個 relative pronoun，意思是要說明 responsibility 指甚麽，這個 clause 就說明是由寵物帶來。

relative clause 目的是要對一個名詞有更多描述
a pet brings 就是要讀者了解多些作者所講的 responsibility 是指甚麽。有了a pet brings 就知作者不是講教仔女的責任而是養寵物的責任。
