Definitely celebrating foreign festivals is a waste of money. I don't see why we should spend money that way as we already have so many festivals of our own. Besides the main purpose of celebrating festivals is to pay respect and appreciation of ones own culture and customs. The money belongs to us and we should spend them on our own instead of some foreign, alien festivals. But if the festival is used to promote tourism, that's another story and yet it defeats the purpose of celebration, that is, to pay respect and appreciation to our culture and customs.

I am going to speak against the topic from three perspectives.

First, Hong Kong is a free economy. People are free to spend on what they like best as long as they enjoy the spending. You cannot say spending on electronics is any better than on clothing. Likewise, celebrating foreign festivals is no more wasteful than celebrating any Chinese festivals.

Second, the world today is only a small place in terms of social distance. We should not be ignorant of the cultures in other parts of the world or we become very short-sighted. At worse We should be tolerant with different values and at best be inclusive towards cultures different from ours.

Third, if Hong Kong is to live up to its claim as an international financial center and if Hong Kong is to remain competitive, we must nurture in our younger generation a global view that is not restricted only to economics, but a view that is culturally and socially based.
