有些vocabulary唔明有咩唔同?

問得有意思。

1. Capable, Capability 是針對要完成的工作而言，指擁有某些適合的 qualities 所以能勝任，Able, Ability 則是一般 (more general) 的能力。
e.g. John has a degree in business management. He is capable of handling (has the capability to handle) the running of our new office.

2. Resolve and solve, almost interchangeable. Resolve 用於解決 dispute, issues, difficult situations, 或逹成恊議。
e.g. The dispute over land ownership is resolved peacefully.
Solve 用於解決難題
e.g. solve the problem of traffic congestion

Opportunity 時機，時間環境令某些事情適合進行
e.g. Now that the interest rate has fallen, it is a good opportunity to hedge in the future market. There is a chance that we will make a fortune.
投資好時機，有機會(大可能性)發逹

Chance is random 偶發，巧合
What is the chance = What are the odds (機會/可能性如何﹖)
There is a chance that we may see a whale on this cruise. 這次旅遊有機會看到鯨魚。(opportunity is not appropriate here)

4. 日常英語只會用 features，不用 characteristics，characteristics 只在學術上用。
e.g. the features of this digital camera,
the characteristics of a finance oriented economy

5. 人類用 human beings，human 是形容詞。human 有時也可作名詞解全人類，不過還是用 human being 或 mankind, humankind (politically correct) 較好。
e.g. In some countries the rulers do not treat their subjects as human beings.
e.g. Most animals cannot see better than humans.
e.g. The washing machine is a great invention for mankind.

6. Enhance my knowledge 正確，不過通常用
enhance my understanding of a certain subject
e.g. enhance my understanding of mechanics
