Most visitors to Macau come from Asian countries, most of them from Hong Kong and mainland China. In 2004, visitors form the mainland and Hong Kong have taken up 57% and 30% respectively of total number of visitors to Macau.
In promoting tourism of Macau, the city has relied on simple publicity strategies and has failed to create any sensation. The image of the city remains off the focus.
Mainland China has become the major source of visitors to Macau. However, Macau has fallen behind other cities in terms of publicity effort on the mainland, as we do not have any reprentation office even in Guangdong, the province where most mainland visitors come from.
The television broadcasters, press and magazines of Macau cannot match the Hong Kong counterparts in terms of penetration and influence in PRD and other parts of mainland. Macau still relies on Hong Kong media to project the image as a tourist destination.
