Don't buy if the shop doesn't let you try a bow above $500.
You have to try a bow to feel how "playable" of the bow. A good bow should be look straight from top. A good bow should be light and balanced when you play anywhere, and easily bounce on strings (i.e. spiccatao).
At your proposed price range, I suggest you choose at Tom Lee main shop or Hong Kong Strings
http://www.hongkongstrings.com if you are totally inexprienced. They both let you test violin bow.
If I were you, at this price range I will buy a bow made in Swiss.
