But as we moved on, the sky turned dark and grew cloudy. We wished to go back to where we started, but it was late. All of a sudden, it started to rain (heavily)...

You can't say rain hardly... should be to rain heavily. and it is too dramatic to start raining HEAVILY all of a sudden.
