Protests 抗議 are again underway 進行中 at the harbour’s edge 邊緣 in Central against the demolition 清拆 of the city’s historic 歷史性的 piers 碼頭. This time demonstrators 示威者 are trying to save 拯救 Queen’s Pier 皇后碼頭,

but today Chief Executive Donald Tsang said there is no way 無辦法 it or the Star Ferry Pier, on which demolition work has already begun 開始佐, can be spared (spared 怎解？).

He said he respects 尊重 the public’s views on preserving 保留 the city’s history and promised 承諾 the government will launch 展開 a new round 新一輪 of public discussions on heritage (heritage 怎解？) preservation 保留 next month.

(1)PIER PRESSURE

“pier”是解作“碼頭”之意

“pressure”是解作“壓力”

“PIER PRESSURE” 是指“因碼頭拆卸所帶來的壓力”,指的當然是政府方面所受的壓力

(2)SPARE
“spare”應是解作“赦免/免去”,指的是“免去遭拆卸的結果”。
“now Chief Executive Donald Tsang said there is no way 無辦法 it or the Star Ferry Pier... can be spared”全句是指“特首曾蔭權指出現在已經無辨法可免去天星碼頭或皇后碼頭遭拆卸的結果,因為拆卸的工程已經開始進行”。
(3)HERITAGE
“heritage”是指“歷史遺跡”,本文指的當然是如天星碼頭或皇后碼頭這些歷史遺跡。
“the government will launch ...preservation next month”全句就是指政府方面,將會於下月展開新一輪的公開諮詢,討論關於歷史遺跡的保存問題。

"Pier Pressure" 是借用法。原句是"peer pressure"，意思是受同僚所做事情而產生的壓力。許多時，我們去做一件事並非是自願的，可能因為我個看到身邊的同僚或同學都做某件事情，我們沒做便好像不是一份子，那時候我們就是受了peer pressure。由於pier跟peer同音，所以新聞主持就用了借用，去說政府在清拆天星碼頭時候遇到的壓力。

to spare 解作“赦免/幸免”
The employer spares John from the recent round of layoff.
John is spared from the recent round of layoff.

heritage preservation 古物/古跡保留/保存
Hertiage也可以解作家族的背境或歷史，或傳統
The city has a heritage of displaying Christmas lights on both sides of the harbour.
John is proud of his mixed heritage: his Chinese father and British mother.
