I have recently retired from a life spent in technical management in the papermaking industry. After completing my studies towards a diploma in Science I started working as a Chemical Technician in a paper mill, later technical Manager of a mill. I continued my studies in the paper technology field including time on a Rotary Scholarship in Canada. For the last 25 years of my working career I was employed to head up the paper chemicals department of a large multinational chemical company. This entailed hands on application of the company's products in the mills. My final assignment was to manage an emulsion polymerisation plant. When I retired I decided to make some contribution to the underpriviliged and I undertook the teaching of chemistry and physics to socially deprived high school students. I live in the city of Durban, in South Africa and the school where I am helping is rural caterng for the education of children living in "informal housing" some of them without parents.
