What are Steel Plant Cylinders used for?

I am assuming you mean for use in auto's as the motor blocks have steel inserts refereed too as "Plants" if I remember correctly they are replaceable generally after 300,000 miles, of course getting that far on those requires maybe 2 rebuilds along with new pistons and rings...
