Problem copying (and playing) DVD?

How do I copy a DVD so I can store it on laptop and play it through VLC Media Player. When I save it, it's just saving to desktop and when I click on this it's just a load of random data not a DVD, how do I store it so can play it as a DVD? I have an external CD/DVD burner by the way and Windows media Player. Sorry if this is obvious to many people more tech savvy than I am and would very much appreciate if someone could spell this out step by step.

What you need to do, my friend, is 'Rip' the contents of the DVD to your laptop's HDD (hard disk drive)/SSD (solid state drive).

There are FREE programs that will allow you to do this.  See the list on the following webpage.

After you've downloaded and installed one ... or more ... of the programs, Open it up and place the DVD that you wish to copy into your DVD drive, which should then be recognised, select which format you wish your 'copy' to be made and where to place it on your HDD/SSD, then start the ripping process.

Be aware that this MAY not be entirely legal, and some DVD manufacturers place 'copy protection' on their discs to prevent unauthorised copying.  (There are ways around this, though.)

you need to rip it as an ISO,  Anyburn will do this.
if you want it saved as a single video file (much smaller file), you can use SmartRipper, and set the max file size really high (like 6000MB)
