Why is gravity so violent?

I mean, why can't someone just fall off a cliff and glide gently to the ground? Why does it have to be so volital?

Without such strong gravity everything would fall apart. Oceans boil. Air escapes gravity. Things skid very easily.

YES they outta have a law against gravity not being responsible enough in not letting people fall...
