Try installing the VLC player, it seems to play what the others don't.
You CAN watch DVDs using your external DVD Drive, my friend, but I presume that you're running Windows 10 on your computer. Unfortunately Microsoft, in their wisdom (sic) saw fit to remove the DVD playing capabilities of the Operating System unless you paid for an extra DVD playing software.
The following webpage offers a list of what they consider to be the best FREE DVD playing softwares, and provides links where to download them from.
Top of the list is VideoLAN VLC Media Player, as suggested by Benny Fitz, for which he gets a thumbs up from me. VLC Media Player is exceptional in that it comes with its own inbuilt codecs (codecs are used in the compression and decompression of various video file formats, which is why it can play almost all video files that you can 'throw' at it).
kee-rect, Mick -- Microsoft crippled Windows Media Player on purpose. you'll find several free media players at cnet.com/downloads that should do the trick
