If I miss the tax deadline on May 15, will I face any IRS penalties ?

It's May 17.  There will only be penalties and interest if you owe.  If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty.  You can file an extension to October 15, but it's only an extension of time to file not to pay.

If you owe, yes.  If you are getting a refund, no.
