Someone told me Christ died so I didn’t have to face the punishment of a horrible death from a wrathful God. I don’t get this at all.

That's what Christianity is all about.  Controlling YOU through a process of creating a disease inside of you, and claiming to have the only cure for it.

Do you also respect Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, too?  Because they're just as real.  Anyway, yeah, the story makes no sense.  According to the story, he didn't die or sacrifice anything; he just had a bad weekend, being "dead" for a day and a half (Friday evening to Sunday morning) and was apparently perfectly fine in the end, and all that showmanship went down because he, as a human manifestation of the local god at the time, supposedly "sacrificed" himself to himself to satisfy rules that he made, instead of simply looking at humanity and saying, "I forgive you," and leaving it at that.  Instead, the writers of the bible had to come up with a ridiculous grandiose story of sacrifice in order to manipulate people with guilt into being followers with the empty threat that if they don't "accept his sacrifice" (ie. take the blame for him having been supposedly executed) that they'll burn in hell for all eternity, which is exactly what the supposed sacrifice was supposed to eliminate.

A talking snake tricked a rib-woman into eating forbidden produce. God then waits a few thousand years, has a woman give birth to his son, who is also himself. He then has his son/self brutally sacrificed to himself, to pay the debt incurred by the rib-woman’s forbidden lunch.

Makes perfect sense!

Get off your duff and read the New Testament.  Then you'll understand.

Eternal laws, namely justice, dictate that for every sin there must be a punishment.  It can be our own, or under the right circumstances the infinite punishment Jesus Christ suffered in the quiet hours before his arrest can be substituted for ours.

The condition is repentance.  We have to regret our sins, give them up, make what amends we can that won't make matters worse, and replace the sin with good works.

That said, there is no forgiveness for murder (only eventual redemption from Hell) nor for the sin against the Holy Ghost.

Wow. So everything should be saved then. Cool.

The truth is that death leads to heaven or hell, and the only way to heaven is through faith in Jesus Christ.

The Bible is very clear that no one can earn their way to heaven since good works do not pay for sins. See Gal. 2:16, Rom. 3:23-28, 4:4-5, Eph. 2:8-9, Tit. 3:5. The only way to heaven is by believing in Jesus for His free gift of eternal life. Jesus shed His blood on the cross as the full payment for our sins. He did all the work; all He requires of us is that we believe in Him. Once you believe in Jesus Christ to save you, you are secure forever!

Because we have all sinned against a perfectly holy and righteous God, we all deserve eternal separation from God in hell (Rom. 6:23). However, God loves us so much that He sent His only Son Jesus to die on the cross as our Substitute so we don't have to go to hell. Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose from the grave three days later (1 Cor. 15:3-4). He gives eternal life freely to anyone who simply believes in Him for it. No one can be saved by doing good works. Salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone (Eph. 2:8-9).

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life" (John 6:47).
