I understand that before the photographic camera there was a device called a 'camera obscura' [Italian for 'dark room'] which projected an image, it need a means to fix the image.
A camera obscura was used by artists to help with perspective etc.

Seems that I got it wrong in thinking that photography originated in Italy, it seems that France and GB both claim it. Secondary questions for anyone with a good knowledge of the history of photography, that's about the inventions of colour film and of movie film.
