What Do Jehovah's Witnesses Think of Unitarians?

Here's an interesting quote from the London Times:

“One of [Britain’s] oldest denominations . . . is in terminal decline and will be extinct within decades,” states The Times of London. The Unitarian movement has fewer than 6,000 members in Britain. Half of these are over 65 years of age. Forecast of the movement’s demise was made by Peter Hughes, a senior minister of the denomination. Using their oldest chapel in Liverpool as an example, Hughes said: “They have had no minister since 1976 and the Unitarian cause there is effectively dead.” The designation “Unitarian” has been used in Britain since 1673, says The Times. “Many English Presbyterians became Unitarians in the 18th century, inspired to reject the belief in the Trinity in a theological debate over the divinity of Christ that caused a crisis in the Church of England.” The paper adds: “But now that it is no longer illegal to embrace a non-Trinitarian belief, and many churches turn a blind eye to ‘believers’ who have liberal views on traditional doctrines, there is not the demand for the Unitarian movement that there was.”

Interesting, Protestants in England were rejecting the trinity some 200 years before C.T. Russell.

I also found it interesting that Unitarians are one of the oldest denominations found in England.

Though we agree, that there is only 1 true God and not a trinity, there are several points Unitarians and Jehovah's Witnesses disagree on.

The Unitarian Church has become the first U.S. denomination to officially endorse same-sex marriages, reports the Christian Century. Delegates attending the religious group’s annual convention voted overwhelmingly to “proclaim the worth of marriage between any two committed persons.” The religious magazine says that “under church rules, each of the church’s 1,040 congregations can decide for itself whether it will endorse the marriage of gay and lesbian couples and whether it will host such weddings.”

I think this quote from the Awake magazine says it all.

Yet in the Unitarian movement that grew up in England from Socinian roots, human reasoning began to take precedence over the Bible. By the mid-1800’s, Unitarians in England and America “began to abandon scripture as the prime source of religious truth,” according to a history of their movement.

Since Jehovah's Witnesses use only the Bible to establish truths, we must list Unitarians among those who have left the truth and had their ears tickled.

Jehovah's witnesses believe that the Bible is the word of God, is inspired by God, and they base their beliefs on the Bible.

We believe that Almighty God is greater than Jesus, because Jesus said so.  John 14:28.

We also believe that Jesus calls his Father his God, because he did so repeatedly in the Bible, on earth, after he was resurrected, and when he was glorified in heaven.  Revelation 3:2,12; Mark 15:34;John 20:17

Jesus is one of many called God or god in the scriptures, including angels, Satan, and human kings and judges.  The title does not uniquely identify him, because that title only means "Mighty One" or "Strong One."

Because we know this, we do believe in his deity, but we do not believe that Jesus, who died and stayed dead for parts of three days, is equal to his Father, who is the one and only Almighty God Jehovah, and who does not die.  Psalm 90:2

Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 6:4-5 at Mark 12:28-31, which says that Jehovah our God is one Jehovah, confirming that his Father is unique, and this is first and greatest commandment of all, to love Him with our whole heart, soul, mind and strength. 

This is what we believe, and try to uphold in our lives, with His help.

That Unitarians are not real Christians. Same as they say about Catholics, Lutherans, Baptists, Greek Orthodox and the like. The JW's claim they are the only real Christians. Therefore, any other Christian denomination would be false and suspect to them. They are a cult spewing cult-like proclamations. There's no gray or subtlety in their sphere. Everyone is their enemy except other JW's in good standing. They are very much in that us versus the rest mind set at all times. It's how they are trained to be. 

They frequently quote Unitarians as support when they attack doctrines like the Trinity or the non-personal being of the Holy Spirit. But they don't openly say "We quote from Unitarians"! They rarely even give a full source reference so that readers can check for themselves where the quote issued from. Although the JWs love to appear as if they've got scholarly support for their anti-trinitarian-holy-spirit views, they still think Unitarians are part of Babylon the Great which God will soon destroy.

When it comes to the JW New World Translation, they use the Greek text of Anglican scholars Westcott and Hort. In the late 1800s they introduced a few Greek manuscripts that they claimed were much more weighty because of being very old. They threatened to withdraw from the Revision Committee of 1881 if Unitarian Dr Vance was not included. Had the majority been listened to, neither Vance, Westcott nor Hort would have been on that Revision Committee and we would have had an orderly improvement of the A.V. still firmly based on the Received Text of Erasmus, Beza, Stephens, Elzevir, Burgon and Scrivener. But Westcott & Hort’s Greek text of 1881 is the text for all modern translations of the N.T. and beloved of those who agree with Unitarianism - especially the JWs.

Any cult that alters the Holy Bible
might as well be atheists.

Each Unitarian church is left to decide its own method and mode of worship with each member deciding what the want to believe.     This makes the term 'Unitarian' somewhat self contradictory.    

 1 Corinthians 1:10    "Now I urge you, brothers, through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you should all speak in agreement and that there should be no divisions among you, but that you may be completely united in the same mind and in the same line of thought."

They (inappropriately) refer to all other Christian denominations and sects collectively as "Christendom"
and they teach that this Witness-defined "Christendom" is cursed by God and doomed.

Both are manmade religions that have separated from Christianity. They do include Jesus Christ in their beliefs, but what they believe/teach about Him is completely incompatible with the core beliefs of Christianity. There is more to being Christian than believing "something" about Jesus Christ.

JWs are technically unitarians themselves.  However, Unitarianism the sect is generally much more liberal and very close to the Quakers in their approach, so their liberal approach wouldn't go down well with them.  This is ironic because they are themselves basically nineteenth century liberals.  They also say you have to be a member of an organisation, namely theirs, to be one of the elect, so there's that.

They hate everyone who is not a member of their cult.
