Most Christians will tell you B ("Hate the sin, love the sinner"), but if you listen to or read post by anti-LGBT Christians it is clear they hate homosexuals and consider them sinners.
B, of course. We have no direct control over what attracts or tempts us. The good or the evil comes in what we do about them.
The act is the sin, not the orientation.
Getting tattoos is a sin. Eating pork or shellfish is a sin. Gossiping is a sin. Cutting your hair and shaving your beard is a sin. Wearing clothes made out of two different materials is a sin. All of these sins are in leviticus but I have to yet see a Christian call anyone out at red Lobster. Can any Christian tell me why all these sins are ok?
Backstory on the word 'sin'.
Alexander the Great conquered the known world from 336bc to 323bc. During his reign the Greek language became common like English is today.
The ancient Greek word to describe transgression was a word that translates into "off the mark".
There was no English equivalent, so translators borrowed a term from archery that meant the same thing: 'sin' means 'off the mark'. Shoot an arrow at a target and miss; you're 'off the mark'. It doesn't matter you're one inch or one mile off the mark, you sin.
God is the bullseye. We are all off the mark.
And the only unforgivable sin is to reject the offer of God's forgiveness.
Good question. People are always saying Christianity teaches that homosexuality is a sin. The original and true Christian Church, the one Church founded by Jesus Christ, to which He promised the fullness of God's truth (which includes well over half of all Christians) has many homosexual members in good standing. They live their lives as God calls them to live, just like the heterosexual members. Homosexuality is not a sin, since it is not freely chosen. It is a psychosocial disorder that causes attraction to certain kinds of sinful behaviors (which heterosexuality also does). However, both heterosexuals and homosexuals are capable of rejecting temptation and living their lives as God calls them to live.
d. Homophobia for any reason is nothing but bigotry.
No one doubts that a tiny segment if humanity experiences same gender sexual atteaction, and that no one actually chooses to have it. But God judges us for what we DO in our bodies. He rewards those who abstain from illicit sex for his glory.
2 Corinthians 5:10 KJV — For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
Now then, lust IS a sin. And if we lust over another, he will judge us for that.
James 1:14-16 KJV — But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren.
Its okay to feel squeemish about homosexuality. You were raised that way. You step over the line when you start using the word sin. Is your God, in all his majesty, the creator of earth and other suns too numerous to count, worried if Ben is playing footsie with Bob under the table? Do you imagine that your deity is that petty? Don't insert your sexual anxieties into your already confused world view.
