Hydrogen peroxide decays into water and oxygen in a first-order process at 20oC:?

2021-03-17 10:28 pm
H2O2 → H2O + ½ O2
The rate law is Rate = 1.77 x 10^-5 [H2O2] where k is in units of s^-1.

a.) What is the half-life (in hours) of H2O2?
b.) If the initial concentration of hydrogen peroxide is 0.1456 M, how much remains after 20 minutes.

a)
Half-life, t½
= ln(2) / k
= [ln(2) / (1.77 × 10⁻⁵ s⁻¹)] × (1 h / 3600 s)
= 10.88 h
≈ 10.9 h

b)
Number of half-lives = (20/60 h) / (10.88 h) = 0.03064
Concentration remains = (0.1456 M) × (1/2)⁰·⁰³⁰⁶⁴ = 0.1425 M
