I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ and I always vote republican, not because it always has the best candidates, but because the politicians generally vote right down party lines. It appears we are not voting for a candidate, but for a party.
I would say that about 25% of my congregation votes democrat. They are good, descent people and I am not sure what their particular poltical beliefs are. They may be democrat because they strongly support the environment and those less fortunate. They may feel that the republican party is genearlly not kind to those in need or to other races. There are things about the way many republicans act, that is not comfortable for me either. I vote republican for the following reasons.
1. I support traditional values such as family, self reliance, the constitution and sexual morality.
2. I believe that society has an obligation to set moral boundaries. It is not ok to do things that are immoral or indescent simply because people do not want boundaries. We sometimes need to sacrifice our fleshly desires for what is right.
I do believe that some LDS democrats are conflicted about some things. They are torn between some core doctrines of the church, such as the sanctity of marriage between a man and women, and their own sensitive feelings towards friends and relatives who are gay.
Note that there are a number of faithful members of the church, such as apostles, who have voted democrat but strongly supported the values that God sets forth through modern day revelation. The church will never take a political stand but strongly enourages members to vote their conscience.
