A basketball is held over head at a height of 2.4 m and thrown to a teammate at 8m/s at an angle of 40deg. If the ball is caught at the same height it was tossed at, how far away is the teammate?

Take g = 9.8 m/s²Consider the vertical motion:
h = u t - (1/2) g t²
0 = (8 sin40°) t - (1/2) (9.8) t²
4.9 t² - 8 t sin40° = 0
t (4.9 t - 8 sin40°) = 0
t ≠ 0 and thus 4.9t = 8 sin40°
Time taken, t = 1.05 s
Horizontal distance
= v t
= (8 cos40°) (1.05)
= 6.4 m
