Do I need to file?
I have AARP do my taxes for free and always have money coming to me but not much. If they don't do them this year due to covid do I need to file if I know I'm to receive money? I figure to break even to hire someone with the money I get back.

Impossible for us to determine whether or not you are required to file because you haven't given us basic info such as your income, the source of the income, your status, etc.
If you expect a refund then its worth it to file. You can file simple returns for free on the IRS website or all of the major tax software programs have free-file options for simple returns.
I doubt that AARP is going to stop doing free tax returns. If anything they'll ramp up their efforts because there are going to be a lot of senior citizens who don't normally file but need to file to get the stimulus money they missed.
I would imagine they'll just use proper precautions such as using zoom calls or document drop off services instead of face to face meetings.
My spouse is one of the volunteers who does taxes for free at the behest of AARP. You are legally required to file annually.
The volunteers are scrambling to make this work, and they will see fewer clients than in years past. Make your appointment early.
You're supposed to, but won't b penalized if you don't. btw many aarp sites will be open, but many won't
You have to prepare you tax return or have someone prepare it for you. AARP is trying to get up in running but how isn't determined yet.
If your income is more than the standard deduction, then you need to file.
Its very easy to do it yourself with almost any software provider. I use OLT.COM.
Most have free options for moderate & low income folks.
You can let the government keep your money, sure.
