Revelation chapters 13 & 16 detail how the whole world (apart from those whose names are in Christ's Book of Life) will be deceived and start adoring the forces leading them to the pit. If the mark was simply 666 that would give the game away. This is a symbolic number (just as everything else here is symbolic and not literal). The deceiver fools people so that it matters not what religion you belong to, or if you are atheist, only those who belong to Christ, by faith, will not be deceived. Pop culture and religious institutions will lead people astray. Only God's word will protect His people. But people love conspiracy theories and are ruled by social media, so the deceiver won't have any difficulty swaying the masses. But the people who know their God won't be swayed, even if they have to die for their faithfulness to Jesus.

Well, a solid 43% of the population believe Donald J. Trump in spite of everything, so it's not implausible that they would be similarly deceived.

To be a Christian requires sacrifice. It requires you to take a stand against the world and society as far as the word of God is concerned, even if you are ridiculed, insulted, hated, or persecuted. It requires you to be faithful and obedient.
