A ladder is leaning against a building. The base of the ladder is 57 feet from the bottom of the
building. The angle between the ground and the ladder is 55 degrees. What is the length of the
ladder from the ground to the top of the building? Round to the nearest tenth. Draw a picture
and show all your work.

Refer to the figure below.
A: the top of the ladder
B: the bottom of the building
C: the bottom of the ladder

In ΔABC:
cos(55°) = (57 feet)/AC
AC = 57/cos(55°) feet
Length of the ladder, AC = 99 feet

If you sketch this you'll see a right triangle that has a base of 57 feet, an unknown height, and an angle on the base that is 55 degrees.

In right triangles, tangent is the ratio between the opposite length over the adjacent length, so:

tan() = opp/adj
tan(55) = x/57
x = 57 tan(55)
x = 81.4 feet (rounded to 1DP)
