A cell with a potential of 0.15 V has the cell reaction

2Cu2+(aq) + H2 2Cu+(aq) + 2H+(aq)

If the concentrations of the ions were 1.0 M and the pressure of H2 was 1.0 bar, then Eo for the half reaction

Cu2+(aq) + e Cu+(aq) would be:

a. -0.075 V
b. -0.15 V
c. 0.075 V
d. 0.15 V
e. 0.30 V

2H⁺(aq) + 2e⁻ ⇌ H₂(g)      E°[H⁺(aq)|H₂(aq)] = 0.00 V
Cu²⁺(aq) + e⁻ ⇌ Cu⁺(aq)   E°[Cu²⁺(aq)|Cu⁺(aq)] = ? V

For the cell reaction:
2Cu²⁺(aq) + H₂(g) ⇌ 2Cu⁺(aq) + 2H⁺(aq)    E°cell = 0.15 V

E°cell = E°(red) - E°(oxid)
0.15 V = E°[Cu²⁺(aq)|Cu⁺(aq)] - (0.00 V)
E°[Cu²⁺(aq)|Cu⁺(aq)] = 0.15 V

The answer: d. 0.15 V
