The solution changed from yellow to blue.
This is because the yellow dioxovanadium(V) ions were reduced to oxovanadium(IV) ions by sulphite ions.
2VO₂⁺(aq) + SO₃²⁻(aq) + 2H⁺(aq) → 2VO²⁺(aq) + SO₄²⁻(aq) + H₂O(ℓ)
