The answer is as follows:
[(5 - (9 - 4x)/-2)] < -5
(2 - 2x) < -5
(2x - 2) < 5
2x < 7
x < 7/2
Graph C shows this inequality.
Answer 'C'
Method ; From each number line take a value near the limit and apply it to the equation.
For 'A' ; Using x = 0
5 - (9 - 4(0))/ - 2 =>
(5 - 9 - 0) / -2 =>
-4/-2 => 4 > - 5 So discount 'a'
For 'B' ; Using x = - 2
5 - (9- 4(-2) / -2 =>
5 - (9 + 8) / -2 =>
5 - 17 / -2 =>
-12/-2 = (+)6 > -5 So discount 'b'
For 'C' ; Using x = 4
5- (9 - 4(4))/ - 2 =>
5 - (9 - 16) / -2 =>
5 - - 7 / -2 =>
12 / -2 = -6 < - 5 So 'c' is correct.
For 'D' ; x = 3
5 - ( 9 - 4(3)/ -2 =>
5 - (9 -12) / -2 =>
5 + 3/ -2 =>
8/-2 = -4 > -5 So discount 'D'.
