Buffer solutions are broadly divided into two types, namely acidic and basic buffer solutions.

(1) Acidic buffers are solutions that have a pH below 7 and contain a weak acid and one of its salts (i.e. the conjugate base of the weak acid). For example, a mixture of acetic acid and sodium acetate acts as a buffer solution with a pH of about 4.75.

(2) On the other hand, basic buffers (also known as alkaline buffers) have a pH above 7 and contain a weak base and one of its salts (i.e. the conjugate acid of the weak base). For example, a mixture of ammonia and ammonium chloride acts as a buffer solution with a pH of about 9.25.
