A 500 g mass hangs from a string. Assume the string’s mass and
air resistance are negligible.
a) Calculate the magnitude of the restoring force on the mass when it is displaced
5.0° from equilibrium.

b) Calculate the magnitude of the restoring force on the mass when it is displaced
10.0° from equilibrium.

c) What do your answers from parts a and b tell you about the relationship
between the magnitude of the restoring force and the mass’ angle of
displacement from equilibrium?

Take g = 9.8 m/s²
Refer to the figure below.

a)
Restoring force
= mg sinθ
= 0.5 × 9.8 × sin(5.0°) N
= 0.43 N

b)
Restoring force
= mg sinθ
= 0.5 × 9.8 × sin(10.0°) N
= 0.85 N

c)
Restoring force = mg sinθ
m and g are constant.
Hence, Restoring force is directly proportional to sin(angle of displacement).

restoring force F1 = 0.5*9.807*sin 5° = 0.0872
*4.9035 = 0.427 N
restoring force F2 = 0.5*9.807*sin 10° = 0.1736*4.9035  =  0.851 N
F2/F1 = sin 10°/ sin 5°
