The Queen would most likely have advised against it, but as we’ve seen over the last 25 years, Her Majesty has permitted her immediate family to divorce and remarry, including the heir apparent. 

An heir to the throne has already married a divorced woman. Charles married Camilla and the status of divorce is not so much an issue as it once was.

Prince William took his time and made sure that the former Catherine Middleton was the right woman for him, so he would have done so with the former Meghan Markle. William would have made sure that he knew the woman he was marrying and the Queen would have noticed this and would probably have given her permission. There would have been disappointment that an American was chosen in the general public. I think the British would prefer that the queen consort be British.

Probably not, but then I was surprised Harry was allowed to do it without giving up his place in the royal succession.  I suspect the royal actuary worked out the odds of the entire Cambridge scion getting bumped off leaving Harry as king, and decided the chances were negligible.

I think you should turn this question around and ask whether, had Harry been next in line to the British Throne after Charles and not his brother William, would he have been allowed to marry Meghan .   I suspect the answer would have been a resounding NO.   Unless he was prepared to do what Edward VIII did, and renounce the Throne.

I think he might have been steered away from the choice for someone with less baggage, although his father will be king of the UK, and is married to a divorcee. Maybe they know better these days than to interfere in the choice of spouse. Technically he needs the sovereign's consent as he is one of the first six in the succession, and if that was not forthcoming he could still marry but would give up his place. 

The Edward and Mrs Simpson scenario was less about the marriage or acceptability of Wallis, and much more about him being a Nazi sympathiser.  

Markle's past would've come out before that happened. William is the heir. If Kate decamped to a rented LA mcmanse with Wills and George in hopes of becoming a Kardashian-ish celeb because she wants privacy, William would be proclaimed mentally disabled.

Yes, of course he'd be allowed to marry her, can't see how they could stop him from marrying anybody he liked. Besides the future king of England is actually already married to a divorcee, Camilla, remember that Prince Charles is the actual future king of England, not William or Harry or whoever. This is not 1936, and divorce is all that big of a deal anymore.

I think the divorce would not have been a problem - nor the American nationality - but I suspect the black heritage and unwillingness to show deference would have been dealbreakers.

Since William and Harry's father is divorced and married to a divorced woman, I don't see why William couldn't have married a divorced woman.

I think there probably would have been some grumblings from the public about a future Queen Consort not being British, but that would probably have been short lived.
