Oxygen gas generated in the thermal decomposition of potassium chlorate is collected over water. At 24ºC and an atmospheric pressure of 762 mm Hg, the volume of gas collected is 0.128 L. The vapour pressure of H2O at 24ºC is 22.4 torr. What is the mass of oxygen collected?

For the O₂ collected:
Pressure, P = (762 - 22.4)/760 atm = 739.6/760 atm
Volume, V = 0.128 L
Molar mass, M = 16.0×2 = 32.0 g/mol
Gas constant, R = 0.08206 L atm / (mol K)
Temperature, T = (273 + 24) K = 297 K

PV = nRT   and   n = m/M
Then, PV = (m/M)RT
Hence, m = PVM/(RT)

Mass of O₂, m = (739.6/760) × 0.128 × 32.0 / (0.08206 × 297) g = 0.164 g
