P=age of Paul now.J=age of John now.
4 years ago: P-4 = 2x(J-4)
P = 2J-8+4
P = 2J-4
Given J=18
P = 2(18)-4
P = 32
If you want to check the answer:
4 years ago, Paul = 32-4 = 28
4 years ago, John = 18-4 =14
So Paul was twice the ago of John.
