Why do people still pray when their prayers usually aren't answered?

A lot of people pray even when they don't expect any answer, as a form of meditation. When you pray you have to formulate your thoughts, and doing that can quite often help you find the solution yourself.

Oh they always get an answer. Its just not what they want or they got tired of waiting for an answer. People need to realize that  our terms for answers to prayer may be  coming from too much arrogance and ignorance.

Because they're so desperate to have them answered, that they convince themselves in any way they can that their prayers HAVE been answered.

God hears and addresses every prayer of the righteous. He is deaf to the prayers of the wicked.


Proverbs 15:29 KJV — The LORD is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.



James 5:16 KJV — Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.


He said "I have a better idea!" to some of my prayers, and in hindsight, I praise him for that. He sees and knows things that I dont.

If each and every day of my life, I prayed to a carton of milk that I might find $100 and then after thirty-seven years of prayer, I finally found $100, do you imagine I'd tell you about the all the time it took for my prayer to be answered or that I'd found the $100 in my own pants pocket, or do you think I'd just say that I prayed for money and found it?  Additionally, people rarely brag about their prayers failing.
 
So if you grow up hearing stories about stuff that's by all rights statistical coincidence happening when someone prays, then you're probably going to be inclined to do it yourself.
 
Additionally, to be fair to those who are religious, it may bring them a sense of comfort when they find themselves in a situation that's otherwise beyond their means to control.
