Lexus RX400H Acting Up After Brake Change ?

After changing the front brakes on my 2007 Lexus RX400H, the brakes were weak and the vehicle did not drive right. The VSC, ABS, and brake light were all on. Shortly after, we realized that the brakes are apparently supposed to be bled by Toyota Techstream, but i don't have access to that. Can the brakes be bled by a brake bleeder kit, and would this cause all the other lights to come on too?

If you pushed the caliper pistons back in and didn't open any bleeder screws you don't need to bleed the brakes. If you didn't replace the brake rotors you didn't do a good brake job and probably have a rust lip and glazing problem on the rotors. For the ABS light to come on there is a problem with a wheel sped sensor and you need a scan tool that can read ABS codes to determine which wheel speed sensor is the problem.Did you shake the wheels to see if you had any bad wheel bearings? A bad wheel bearing can also cause a wheel speed sensor to fail.

It's a hybrid with a regenerative braking system, so there are a few things you may need to take into account - this video goes through the process thoroughly (a bit too thoroughly):

Do not drive the vehicle again until you fix the brakes (or get them fixed).  If necessary, have it towed to a dealership, or a mechanic that is qualified to work on Lexus vehicles.

You haven’t given enough information for anyone to provide specific answers.

What, exactly, do you mean by “brake change”?

Did you change just the pads, or was it the discs (US=rotors) as well? Or did you change the calipers as well?

All involve different levels of work and can result in different mistakes.

As an example, new pads on badly worn/grooved discs will give poor braking. Harder grade “racing” pads will give appalling braking at regular road speeds as they never get hot enough. Or if discs get replaced, was the storage varnish/oil cleaned off before fitting using brake cleaner? Were the calipers fully removed and disconnected, or were they just left connected but rotated out of the way? Or were they fully unbolted but left to hang on the fluid lines and pad wear sensor wires?

I could go on, but all that is obvious is that whoever did the job made a mistake OR you have been unlucky and had a coincidental age-related failure with a wheel speed sensor on any of the 4 hubs, or a coincidental failure of the ABS pump. It’s more likely to be a mistake. But if the discs were not fully cleaned before fitting then the new pads which must be fitted with them are now going to be ruined. But failure to clean the discs alone would not cause all those problems.

The car is now unsafe to drive in its current state, so get someone who knows what they’re doing to come to your vehicle to diagnose and repair the fault.

There is nothing especially unusual about Lexus brake systems as they’re just regular Toyota parts. But you do need to know exactly what you are doing when you do any brake repairs or maintenance.

Buy the Haynes manual for the car online. This will detail the brake change procedure. Or it may say 'dealer only'.

Techstream is not such a big deal. Basically a bleeder system. With all respects. Your vehicle's brakes should only be done by a certified technician with your particular car. It's not like the old days anymore where you can just slap some pads on and off you go. Now you have vehicle speed control and automated brake sensing controls going off when they shouldn't be and the bleeding has nothing to do with either of those sensors. I am just trying to help you in the long run so you don't mess something up where your vehicles brakes are at stake, something of essential importance.
Check to make sure the ABS sensor wire is plugged in on each side you serviced. One of them is not and it will also cause the speed sensing fault. If you are not too sure about that, just roll your car up to a shop that uses ASE Certified Technicians.
It might be best for them to just have a look over your work to make sure nothing was skipped out on. With all respects to you, understand that the systems have changed somewhat and these folks work on them every day. Maybe you should give them the opportunity to have a look at your brakes for you.
Best to you.
