Can I use an iphone from Europe in the UK?

My uncle has gifted me with an iphone from Switzerland (which is where he lives) and Im here in the UK (London) would the phone work? Or is there anything I need to be aware of

As long as it is unlocked from the original carrier so it can take a UK SIM card, it should work fine.
If it has not been unlocked, then your uncle must request the unlock from whatever carrier it was used with. That only usually takes a few days.
