The Archangel that became Satan was a created being, yes. Satan created his own bad character by going down that road all on his own.

He was created as a glorious angel of light named Lucifer, in Heaven. He led a rebellion of angels against God, and was cast out of Heaven with his followers. Lucifer became Satan.

Yes, he was an angel who chose to disobey God.

God has billions of Sons.  Lucifer, Satan, the Devil, beelzebub, Belial, and several other Sons of God, formed a gang called the Dragon(serpent); the serpent was not a snake. The Devil, whom Jesus called prince of this world, remains closest to earth as main representative of the Dragon.

Satan was one of the Archangels. He is also called Lucifer, because he was the light bearer, a highly honored position. But Satan made an irrevocable choice to reject Heaven because he wanted to be a god too and fought for this right. A great battle broke out in heaven and some angels fell from their state of innocence and grace and became followers of Satan. They deliberately decided to rebel under the auspices of Satan. Michael, the Archangel of God, chosen to defeat Satan, fought violently against him, and Satan and his followers were cast out of heaven into earth. They were banned forever from enjoying the beauty of God’s kingdom, but as Revelation 12:7-8 relates, they are free to entice and win as many souls as possible for their kingdom of Hell.

WHY SATAN FELL>>>>>

FROM THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH>>>>>>>>>>>>>

SATAN NAME BEFORE WAS LUCIFER & WHY HE FELL WITH HIS ANGELS

HIS NAME WAS LUCIFER (AN ARCHANGEL) AND HIS REBELLION WAS AN INSTANT ACT

. Don't forget that, although Lucifer had a superabundance of spiritual gifts, he was also endowed, as we are, with the gift of free will. God left him free to choose good over evil, and, as we know, he chose evil.

Consider Adam and Eve. Before the Fall they possessed immortality, control over their passions and appetites, the complete integrity of their wills, as well as a human intelligence far superior to that which we have now. Yet, like Lucifer, they chose to commit a mortal sin. This means God allowed them to exercise their free will.

As for the particular sin the bad angels committed, many theologians believe that in their pre-fallen state the angels were given a foreknowledge of humans (who would be inferior to them), as well as a foreknowledge that God himself (the second Person of the Trinity) would be incarnated as a man and redeem the universe through his death on the cross.

This revelation angered Lucifer because it meant he and the other angels would have to worship God incarnate. Lucifer and the other angels who fell were so proud of being superior to men that their overweening arrogance wouldn't allow them to worship Jesus Christ the God-Man. This refusal--this non serviam--stemmed from pride.

The same place as Gods, from the human imagination.
