would a compound like 3-butyl-4-methyloctyne exist?
wouldn't the longest carbon chain be 10?

In the name of 3-butyl-4-methyloctyne, the position (number) of the C≡C triple bond is not shown.  Suppose it is 3-butyl-4-methyl-1-octyne (3-butyl-4-methyloct-1-yne in British), and its structure is shown below.

Such a compound could exists. The longest chain of an organic compound could contain many times of 10 carbon atoms. However, the number of carbon atoms in organic compounds are limited to certain numbers in the syllabus of chemistry study.
