10 mL of gastric juice sample (HCl) has been taken from a patient and placed in an erlenmeyer flask. After the addition of 50 mL of distilled water the sample was titrated with 1M NaOH solution. If 13 mL of NaOH is required to reach the endpoint of the titration what is the pH of the sample?

Equation for the reaction in titration:
HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O
Mole ratio HCl : NaOH = 1 : 1

Moles of NaOH reacted = (1 mol/L) × (13/1000 mL) = 0.013 mol
Moles of HCl in the sample = 0.013 mol
Molarity of HCl in the sample = (0.013 mol) / (10/1000 L) = 1.3 M

HCl is a strong acid which completely ionized in water to give H₃O⁺ ions.
[H₃O⁺] in the sample = 1.3 M
pH of the sample = -log[H₃O⁺] = -log(1.3) = -0.1
