Suppose that it is NF₃ but not ND₃.

The structure of NF₃ is shown below. N is the central atom. N has five valence electrons, and the outermost shell of N atom forms three N-F single bonds and one lone pair. The 4 electron groups (three N-F bonds and one lone pair) are sp³ hybridized.

On the other hands, the electron configuration of each terminal F atom is F: 1s² 2s² 2p⁵ in which one of the 2p orbitals has an unpaired electrons.

Each N-F bond is formed by overlapping one sp³ orbital on N atom and one 2p orbital on F atom.
