Based on the positive value of ΔG°, dissolution of borax is not spontaneous under standard conditions at 298K. Why did borax in the lab dissolve in water if the process was not spontaneous? [Hint: think about what the “standard conditions” are for thermodynamic values.]

The temp. of experiment was 40.0 °C, does this have anything to do with this?

When T = 298 K (25°C):
ΔG° > 0
Hence, the process is not spontaneous at 298 K (25°C).

When T = 313 K (40°C)
ΔG = ΔG° + R T ln(K) < 0
Hence, the process is spontaneous at 313 K (40°C).
