Where does the ancient name ‘godric’ originate?

I think it’s a name which originates in England dating back to the early Middle Ages...

It's an Anglo-Saxon name meaning "God's rule". There was a Saint Godric of Finchale in the 11th century. After that, the name died out apart from the odd monk adopting it - until JK Rowling came along.
